Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Melbourne
Cruise season runs roughly October to April, the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer, with typical highs of 20-30°C. Melbourne is famous for 'four seasons in one day', so pack a layer even in midsummer.
Getting back to the ship on time
The city is close and trams are frequent, but route 109 plus the 500 m walk back along the pier takes 30-40 minutes door to door, so leave the CBD at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. Allow extra margin if venturing to St Kilda.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.

A little history
Melbourne was founded in 1835 by free settlers from Van Diemen's Land, and in 1837 surveyor Robert Hoddle laid out the orderly city-centre street plan still known today as the Hoddle Grid.
The 1850s Victorian gold rush transformed 'Marvellous Melbourne' into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities, funding the ornate boom-era buildings that still line Collins Street.
Australian Rules football was codified in Melbourne in the late 1850s, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) later served as the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games.
The Melbourne Cup, the horse race that 'stops a nation', has been run at Flemington Racecourse since 1861 and is such an institution that Cup Day is a public holiday in Melbourne.
