🇨🇷 Puntarenas, Costa Rica — Cruise Port Guide
Costa Rica's Pacific gateway — a sandspit town where the pier runs straight into the main street, and behind it a country that turned 25 percent of itself into protected forest. Cloud forest, volcanoes and sloths, all within a day's drive.

Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Puntarenas
December to April is the dry season and the main cruise season. May to November is the green season — cheaper, emptier and much wetter, with afternoon downpours.
Getting back to the ship on time
Everything worth seeing is one to three hours away on mountain roads, and the ship will not wait for independent tours. Take the ship's excursion for Monteverde or Manuel Antonio; save the independent option for the Tárcoles crocodiles or the town itself.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
Things to do in Puntarenas
Monteverde cloud forest
Two hours up a mountain road into permanent mist, with hanging bridges through the canopy and the chance of a resplendent quetzal. A long day — take the ship's excursion for the guaranteed return.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Rainforest running down to white beaches, with sloths, capuchins and howler monkeys close to the trails. About two and a half hours south.
Tárcoles River crocodile safari
A boat trip among some of the largest American crocodiles anywhere, plus scarlet macaws in the mangroves. Closer than the big parks, about an hour away.
Zip line through the canopy
Costa Rica invented canopy zip-lining. Several courses within an hour of the pier, most combining cables with hanging bridges.
Coffee plantation tour
Up in the highlands where the altitude and volcanic soil do the work. You see picking, drying and roasting, and taste the difference between grades.
Walk the Paseo de los Turistas
The beachfront promenade beside the pier — craft stalls, Churchill stands and a swimmable beach. The low-effort option if the tours look long.

Local phrases
A little history
Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 and put the money into education and health. It has protected roughly a quarter of its land area, and generates almost all its electricity from renewables.
Pura vida is the national phrase and does genuine work — greeting, thanks, agreement and a general philosophy, all at once.
Puntarenas sits on a sandspit barely 100 metres wide in places, with the Gulf of Nicoya on one side and an estuary on the other.
The country holds about 5 percent of the world's known biodiversity on 0.03 percent of its land surface.
Cruise passengers dock at a pier running right into town, which is unusually convenient — but the rainforest, the volcanoes and the wildlife are all one to three hours inland.
