When to visit Rio de Janeiro
The cruise season is the southern summer, December to March, which is also the hottest and wettest. May to October is drier, milder and much less crowded.
Good to know
Take a copy of your passport rather than the original, leave jewellery and expensive watches on the ship, and use registered taxis or a ride app rather than hailing on the street. Christ the Redeemer disappears into cloud regularly — check the webcam before you commit half a day to it.
Things to do in Rio de Janeiro
Christ the Redeemer
Take the cog train up through the Tijuca rainforest. Book a timed ticket, go early, and accept that cloud may win — check the webcam before committing.
Sugarloaf Mountain
Two cable car stages to a granite dome over the harbour mouth. Late afternoon is best: you get the bay in daylight and the city lighting up.
Copacabana & Ipanema
Walk the mosaic promenade between the two, hire a chair and umbrella, and drink coconut water from the kiosks. Take almost nothing with you.
Santa Teresa & the Selarón Steps
A hillside of colonial houses reached by tram, and the tiled staircase a Chilean artist covered in 2,000 tiles from 60 countries over 23 years.
Tijuca National Park
The world's largest urban rainforest, replanted by hand from the 1860s after coffee stripped the hills. Waterfalls and monkeys, 30 minutes from the beach.
Escadaria & Lapa arches at night
Lapa's colonial aqueduct is the centre of the city's nightlife, with samba spilling out of doorways from Thursday onward — go with a group.
