Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Santos (São Paulo)
The Brazilian cruise season runs roughly December to March. April to September is drier and cooler but few ships sail.
Getting back to the ship on time
A São Paulo day trip is three hours of driving minimum and the road down the escarpment can close or crawl with no warning. If you go, go with the ship's excursion so the vessel waits for you.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
Things to do in Santos (São Paulo)
Coffee Museum
The old exchange with its stained-glass dome and original trading floor, plus a café pouring single-origin Brazilian coffee. Compact and genuinely interesting.
Beach gardens & the promenade
Cycle or walk the record-breaking 5.3-kilometre garden strip between the sand and the buildings. Bike hire stations run the length of it.
Historic centre tram
A restored tram loops the old town past the coffee palaces and the 1922 exchange. Cheap, short, and the easiest way to see the centre.
Monte Serrat funicular
A funicular up a 157-metre hill for a view over the port, the beach curve and the container terminals. Chapel and café at the top.
São Paulo day trip
An hour and a half each way on a good day. Doable for the Pinacoteca or the Municipal Market, but keep a wide margin — the road down the escarpment jams without warning.
Pelé Museum & Vila Belmiro
The museum in a restored mansion and the Santos FC stadium where he played. Essential if anyone in your party follows football.

A little history
Santos handles more cargo than any other port in Latin America, and the coffee that built São Paulo state shipped from these wharves.
The seafront garden runs 5.3 kilometres along the beach and holds the Guinness record as the largest beachfront garden in the world.
The Bolsa Oficial de Café, opened in 1922, is where Brazilian coffee prices were set for the world. It is now a museum and the trading floor is intact.
Pelé played for Santos FC from 1956 to 1974, scored over 600 goals for the club, and is entombed in a mausoleum in the city.
São Paulo is about 80 kilometres inland but the road climbs a coastal escarpment and traffic is heavy — a city day trip needs an early start and a hard turnaround time.
