Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Skagway
Best May through September; Skagway sits in a rain shadow so it's drier and often sunnier than other Southeast Alaska ports, with cool temps in the 50s-60s°F.
Getting back to the ship on time
Check which dock you're on. The Railroad Dock, Skagway's largest, has been shut to pedestrians since rockslides in 2022, so everyone moves by shuttle or water taxi, which queues badly both ways on multi-ship days — mitigation work runs through winter 2028, so expect this all season. White Pass and Yukon trips cross into Canada, so leave 60-90 minutes of buffer.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.

A little history
Skagway boomed in 1897–98 as the gateway for stampeders heading to the Klondike goldfields.
Its downtown is preserved as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park.
Tlingit Chilkoot and Chilkat peoples used these mountain trade routes long before prospectors arrived.
Wooden boardwalks and false-front buildings keep the 1890s frontier character alive.
