Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Cairns
May to October is the dry season and the best time for the reef. Stinger season runs November to May, when swimming without a suit is inadvisable.
Getting back to the ship on time
Reef trips are all-day and the boats leave early — an outer-reef trip typically will not fit unless the ship is in by 8am and out after 5pm. Check the times before booking anything independently.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
Things to do in Cairns
Great Barrier Reef trip
Catamarans run to the outer reef pontoons for snorkelling, diving and glass-bottom boats. A full day, and the single reason most people come.
Kuranda by rail and Skyrail
Up on the 1890s railway through gorges and waterfalls, back over the canopy by cable car. The classic combination, and rightly so.
Daintree & Cape Tribulation
Two hours north to where the rainforest meets the reef, with a river cruise for crocodiles and a boardwalk through 180-million-year-old forest.
Cairns Esplanade & lagoon
A free saltwater lagoon on the seafront — you cannot swim off the mudflats here — with a boardwalk and a good bird-watching stretch.
Tjapukai or Aboriginal cultural tour
Indigenous-run experiences covering the Djabugay people's country, with fire-making, spear throwing and dance. Choose the Aboriginal-owned operators.
Hot air balloon over the Tablelands
Dawn flights over the Atherton Tablelands with kangaroos scattering below. Very early start, and weather-dependent.

A little history
Cairns is the only city on earth where two UNESCO World Heritage areas meet — the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest.
The Daintree is estimated at around 180 million years old, making it the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world.
The reef is the largest living structure on the planet and the only one visible from space; it has suffered repeated mass bleaching events, and reef operators will discuss it frankly.
The Kuranda Scenic Railway was hand-cut through the range in the 1880s by workers who died in numbers building 15 tunnels and 37 bridges.
Stinger season runs roughly November to May, when box jellyfish make unprotected swimming inadvisable — reef operators provide stinger suits.
