🇦🇺 Fremantle (Perth), Australia — Cruise Port Guide
A Victorian port town that never got redeveloped, so the whole place is heritage limestone and cast iron — with a convict prison, a maritime museum holding a winged racing yacht, and Perth twenty minutes up the river.

Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Fremantle (Perth)
October to April. Summer afternoons are cooled by the Fremantle Doctor sea breeze, which arrives with striking regularity.
Getting back to the ship on time
Rottnest ferries book out in summer and the last sailing back is firm — book ahead and take the earlier return. Perth and Rottnest in one day is not realistic.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
Things to do in Fremantle (Perth)
Fremantle Prison
Convict-built and used until 1991. The tunnels tour takes you underground and onto water in a boat; the torchlight tour is the atmospheric one.
Rottnest Island
Thirty minutes by fast ferry to quokkas, bike hire and a string of empty bays. A full day and the best thing on this coast.
WA Maritime Museum
On the harbour, with Australia II's winged keel and a submarine alongside. The shipwreck galleries down the road cover the Batavia mutiny.
Perth & Kings Park
Twenty minutes by train. Kings Park is larger than Central Park and looks over the city and the Swan River.
Cappuccino Strip & the markets
South Terrace cafés and the 1897 market hall, both a few minutes from the passenger terminal.
Swan Valley wine
Australia's oldest wine region, 45 minutes out, doing verdelho and chenin and a lot of cellar-door tastings.

A little history
Fremantle was spared 1960s and 70s redevelopment by economic stagnation, then restored for the 1987 America's Cup defence. The result is one of the best-preserved Victorian port townscapes in the world.
Fremantle Prison, built by convicts for their own incarceration from 1851, held prisoners until 1991 and is now World Heritage listed.
Australia II, the yacht that ended the New York Yacht Club's 132-year hold on the America's Cup in 1983 with its secret winged keel, is displayed at the Maritime Museum.
Rottnest Island's quokkas are so unbothered by people that the quokka selfie became a global phenomenon; the island is called Wadjemup by the Whadjuk Noongar and has a difficult history as a prison.
The Fremantle Doctor is a reliable afternoon sea breeze that arrives most summer days and drops the temperature sharply.
