Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Cuverville Island
Ships run here only in the austral summer, roughly November to March. Daytime air sits around -2 to 3°C with wind chill well below that; December and January bring 20 hours of daylight, February and March bring the whales and better ice.
Good to know
The Errera Channel packs with drifting ice and can close the approach at short notice. Penguin highways cross the walking route — you stop and wait, which is slower than people expect when the clock is running.
Things to do in Cuverville Island
Walk up to the gentoo colonies
Nests run up the scree in terraces. Watch how the birds use their highways — packed trails of guano-stained snow that you must never stand on, because a penguin will simply wait.
Zodiac cruise iceberg alley
Some of the best ice on any peninsula itinerary drifts through the Errera Channel. Drivers cut the motor and let you listen to it crack.
Kayak the channel
Paddling here puts you at eye level with brash ice and, on a lucky day, a curious humpback. Ships that carry kayaks often choose Cuverville or Paradise Bay.
Look for the moss beds
Behind the beach are banks of Antarctic moss centuries old — some of the richest plant growth on the continent. Guides rope the route; it exists to keep boots off them.
Whale watching from deck
The channel is deep and krill-rich. Late in the season humpbacks feed here in numbers, sometimes bubble-netting alongside stopped Zodiacs.

A little history
Named by the Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache during the 1897–1899 Belgica expedition, after a French vice-admiral — that voyage was the first to overwinter in Antarctic waters, largely by accident when the ship froze in.
The gentoo colony has been counted since the 1990s and has grown steadily; the peninsula has warmed faster than almost anywhere on earth and gentoos have benefited.
The Errera Channel funnels drifting bergs, so the water around the island is often packed with sculpted ice — arches, blue-veined slabs and growlers.
Landings are managed to protect the moss beds behind the beach, which are far more fragile than they look and take decades to recover from a footprint.
