🇦🇶 Neko Harbour, Antarctica — Cruise Port Guide

A second continental landing, and the noisiest place on the peninsula — the glacier at the head of the bay calves so often that guides move the group high up the beach before anyone steps ashore.

Getting ashore

Tender (Zodiac). Zodiac landing onto a stony beach, with the group led immediately to high ground away from the glacier front. Wet landing, boots on, and expect to be walking on snow within a minute of stepping ashore.

When to visit Neko Harbour

Ships run here only in the austral summer, roughly November to March. Daytime air sits around -2 to 3°C with wind chill well below that; December and January bring 20 hours of daylight, February and March bring the whales and better ice.

Good to know

The glacier at the head of the bay calves without warning and can push a wave right across the landing beach — the guides move everyone uphill for exactly this reason, and it is not a suggestion. Landings here are also called off in swell.

Things to do in Neko Harbour

Climb to the glacier viewpoint

Active · ~1.5h

A switchback trail stamped into the snow leads to a saddle above the bay. It is the best view on many itineraries — glacier on one side, ship anchored in ice on the other.

Watch the glacier calve

Scenic · ~1h

The face at the head of the harbour drops slabs of ice into the water with a crack like gunfire, often several times an hour. The sound arrives after the collapse, which catches everyone out.

Visit the gentoo colony

Wildlife · ~1h

Penguin highways run right across the landing beach. Stand still and give way — the birds have right of way, and they will walk within a metre of your boots if you let them.

Zodiac cruise the bergs

Scenic · ~1.5h

Drivers work the ice at the mouth of the bay, where grounded bergs strand and slowly tip. Look for crabeater seals hauled out on the flatter floes.

Camp ashore overnight

Adventure · ~8h

Neko is one of the regular overnight camping sites for ships that offer it. You bivvy in the snow, there are no tents on some programmes, and nobody really sleeps.

A little history

The harbour is named after the Neko, a Norwegian floating whale factory that worked these waters between 1911 and 1924 — many peninsula place names come from the whaling fleet rather than explorers.

This is a mainland landing, so it is the continental tick for ships that cannot get into Paradise Bay because of ice.

Guides insist you stay high on the beach for good reason: a calving face can push a wave across the landing site in seconds, and Zodiacs are pulled well up between runs.

The gentoo colony here has been monitored for decades and has grown as the peninsula has warmed — gentoos are moving south while Adélies retreat.
