Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Nouméa
September to November and April to May are the sweet spots. January to March is the cyclone season and hot.
Good to know
Many shops and restaurants close for a long lunch and much of Sunday, in the French manner. Independence-related demonstrations occasionally disrupt transport — ships will advise if so.
Things to do in Nouméa
Tjibaou Cultural Centre
Renzo Piano's timber cases in a coastal park, with Kanak art, a customary path through native planting, and the clearest explanation of Kanak culture available.
Amédée Lighthouse islet
A catamaran out to a coral islet with a 56-metre iron lighthouse shipped from Paris in 1865, snorkelling with turtles and sea snakes, and a buffet lunch.
Baie des Citrons & Anse Vata
Two town beaches a short bus ride apart — one sheltered and swimmable, the other windy and full of kitesurfers.
Nouméa market
The blue pavilions by the marina, best early: pastries and coffee, fish, and Kanak craft. It is a French market in a Pacific climate.
Aquarium des Lagons
Small, excellent, and focused entirely on the lagoon — including nautilus, which were first bred in captivity here.
Mount Koghi rainforest
Half an hour inland and 500 metres up into cloud forest, with walking trails and a canopy course among endemic plants.
What to eat
- Bougna (Kanak earth-oven parcel)
- Coconut crab
- Fresh baguette
- Cerf (venison)
- Lemon shark

The lagoon surrounding the island is the largest enclosed lagoon in the world and is UNESCO World Heritage listed for its coral diversity.
The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 1998, honours the assassinated independence leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou. Its ten curved timber cases echo Kanak great houses.
