When to visit Papeete (Tahiti)
May to October is the dry season. November to April is hot, humid and much wetter.
Good to know
French Polynesia is expensive — expect to pay European prices for everything. Cash in CFP francs is useful at the market and roulottes; cards work at hotels and larger restaurants.
Things to do in Papeete (Tahiti)
Papeete market
Two floors of vanilla, monoi oil, black pearls and pareo, plus poisson cru cooked on the spot. Go early; it is quiet by mid-morning.
Island circle tour
The coast road loops the island past blowholes, the Arahoho lava tubes, black-sand beaches and waterfalls in the Papenoo valley.
Moorea day trip
Thirty minutes by fast ferry to a more beautiful island than Tahiti — Cook's Bay, Belvedere lookout and clear lagoon water.
Snorkel the lagoon
Boat trips to the reef for coral gardens, rays and blacktip reef sharks in shallow water. Calmer and clearer than anything off the town beaches.
Museum of Tahiti and the Islands
Recently rebuilt, covering Polynesian navigation, tattoo, and the settlement of the Pacific by open-ocean voyaging. The best context you can get.
Papeno'o valley 4x4
Into the extinct crater at the island's heart along a rough track, past waterfalls and river crossings to the ancient marae sites.
