A little history
The Titanic left Southampton on 10 April 1912; more than 500 of the crew who died called this city home, and the SeaCity Museum tells their story street by street.
Southampton's medieval town walls are among the best preserved in England — you can walk long stretches, entering through the 800-year-old Bargate.
The Mayflower and Speedwell set out from Southampton in August 1620 before the Pilgrims' final departure for America.
A rare double high tide gives the port roughly 17 hours of high water a day — one reason it grew into Europe's busiest cruise-turnaround harbour.
The Supermarine Spitfire was designed and first flown in Southampton in 1936; Solent Sky Museum keeps a hangar of Solent-built aircraft.
