🇳🇿 Wellington, New Zealand — Cruise Port Guide

New Zealand's capital, built around a harbour in a bowl of hills, with a cable car climbing out of the centre, a national museum that is genuinely excellent and free, and the film workshop that built Middle-earth.

Getting ashore

Dock. Ships berth at Aotea Quay or Kings Wharf, about 10 minutes by shuttle from the centre — the walk is possible but dull and past container terminals.

When to visit Wellington

December to March. Wellington is famously windy and the harbour can be rough; ferry and cable car services run regardless.

Good to know

Wind occasionally forces ships to skip Wellington altogether. If you have booked something independently, take the refundable option.

Things to do in Wellington

Te Papa museum

History · ~3h

Free, six floors, and covers Māori history, the Treaty of Waitangi, natural history and the Gallipoli exhibition designed by Weta. The best museum in the country.

Cable car & Botanic Garden

View · ~2h

Ride up from Lambton Quay for the harbour view, then walk down through the gardens and the rose garden to the centre.

Weta Workshop tour

Fun · ~3h

In Miramar, near the port. You see the actual workshop and the people making things — better than the film-set tours.

Zealandia sanctuary

Wildlife · ~3.5h

A fenced valley where introduced predators have been removed and native birds have returned — kākā, tūī, and takahē. Rare birds within the city limits.

Mount Victoria lookout

View · ~1.5h

The whole harbour, the city and the hills in one sweep, twenty minutes from the ship. Several Lord of the Rings scenes were filmed on the slopes.

Wairarapa wine or the Kāpiti coast

Food · ~6h

Over the Rimutaka hill to Martinborough's pinot noir vineyards — a full day, but the best wine within reach of the capital.

What to eat

Ortega Fish Shack — Wellington's best-loved fish restaurant, in a room full of paintings, on Cuba Street's edge. Book.
Cuba Street cafés — The city claims more cafés per head than New York; Cuba Street is where to test that, and the flat white was arguably invented in this country.
Wellington Night Market — Friday and Saturday on Cuba Street, with dumplings, satay and Pacific food from a couple of dozen stalls.

A little history

Wellington is the southernmost capital city in the world and sits directly on a major fault line; the Te Papa museum is built on base isolators so it can move in an earthquake.

Te Papa Tongarewa, the national museum, is free, holds the only colossal squid on display anywhere, and treats Māori taonga as living rather than archival.

Weta Workshop built the props, armour and creatures for The Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Avatar, and runs tours of the working studio in Miramar.

The cable car of 1902 climbs from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Garden in five minutes and is still used by commuters, not just tourists.

The harbour is famous for wind — the city is nicknamed Windy Wellington, and gusts over 100 km/h are routine.
