A little history
Portland Head Light, completed in 1791 on the orders of George Washington, is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and one of the most photographed in America.
The Old Port's Victorian brick warehouses and cobblestone streets, once a decaying commercial waterfront, were revived from the 1970s onward into a lively district of shops, pubs and galleries.
Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland in 1807, and his boyhood home on Congress Street is the oldest standing structure on the Portland peninsula.
The Great Fire of July 4, 1866 destroyed much of the city, which rebuilt in brick and adopted the phoenix on its seal with the motto 'Resurgam' — 'I shall rise again.'
