🇺🇸 San Diego, United States — Cruise Port Guide
The most relaxed big homeport in America. The terminal sits on the downtown waterfront, Balboa Park's museums are a short ride away, and the weather is so consistently mild that locals have stopped discussing it.

Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit San Diego
Cruise ships sail year-round from here, so there is no closed season — pick your month for the weather at the far end of the itinerary rather than for the homeport.
Getting back to the ship on time
Unusually low-stress as homeports go. The one trap is a Tijuana day trip: the border crossing back into the US can take two or three hours without warning, which has cost people their sailing.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
Things to do in San Diego
Balboa Park
1,200 acres of Spanish colonial revival architecture, gardens and 17 museums. The botanical building and the lily pond are free and worth the walk alone.
USS Midway Museum
An aircraft carrier moored beside the terminal, with 30 restored aircraft on the flight deck and an audio tour narrated by former crew.
San Diego Zoo
One of the great zoos, in Balboa Park, and hilly enough that the guided bus tour first is genuinely good advice.
Old Town
The original Spanish and Mexican settlement, now a state historic park of adobe buildings, tortilla makers and mariachi. Free to wander.
Coronado & Hotel del Coronado
Over the bridge or on the ferry to a wide white beach and the red-roofed 1888 hotel from Some Like It Hot.
Gaslamp Quarter
Sixteen blocks of Victorian commercial buildings directly behind the cruise terminal — restaurants, bars and rooftops, busy every night.
What to eat

A little history
San Diego was the first place Europeans landed on the west coast of what is now the United States — Cabrillo came ashore in 1542, and the Old Town presidio of 1769 was California's first Spanish settlement.
Balboa Park's ornate buildings were built for the 1915 Panama–California Exposition and were meant to be temporary. They now hold 17 museums and the zoo.
The cruise terminal is on Broadway Pier in the middle of downtown — one of very few American ports where you can genuinely walk off the ship into a city centre.
The USS Midway, moored a few hundred metres from the cruise terminal, served from 1945 to 1992 and is now the most visited naval museum in the country.
Tijuana is about 20 miles south. Crossing is straightforward with a passport, but the return queue is unpredictable and has ruined more than one embarkation.
