Good to know
Bimini is small and generally safe; the main hazards are strong sun, boat and golf-cart traffic on the narrow King's Highway, and currents on boat-based snorkel trips.

A little history
Ernest Hemingway spent the summers of 1935-1937 in Bimini aboard his boat Pilar, pioneering big-game tuna and marlin fishing and drawing on the island for To Have and Have Not and the opening of Islands in the Stream.
Legend places the Fountain of Youth on Bimini, and Juan Ponce de León was said to be searching for it when he sailed through these waters in 1513 — a well on South Bimini is still signposted as the fabled spring.
The Bimini Road, a half-mile line of huge submerged limestone blocks discovered in 1968 in about 18 feet of water off North Bimini, still fuels debate between geologists who call it natural beachrock and believers who link it to Atlantis.
During Prohibition, Bimini's location just 50 miles from Florida made it a major rum-running hub, and the concrete-hulled SS Sapona served as a floating liquor warehouse until a 1926 hurricane drove her aground.
