When to visit Montego Bay

Good to know

Agree taxi fares before getting in — meters are not used — and expect persistent but good-natured selling on the beaches. Dunn's River Falls is a four-hour round trip before you climb anything.

Things to do in Montego Bay

Doctor's Cave Beach

Beach · ~3h

The famous white-sand beach on the Hip Strip, with clear calm water and an entry fee that keeps it tidy. Ten minutes from the pier.

Bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae

Water · ~4h

A raftsman poles you down a jade-green river for about 90 minutes. Slow, quiet and the most relaxing thing on the island.

Rose Hall Great House

History · ~3h

A restored 1770s plantation house with the White Witch legend attached. The evening candlelight tour leans into the ghost story.

Dunn's River Falls

Nature · ~6h

Two hours east near Ocho Rios: climb a 180-metre waterfall in a human chain. Iconic, crowded, and genuinely fun.

Jerk lunch at Scotchies

Food · ~2h

Chicken and pork smoked over pimento wood, chopped with a cleaver, sold by the quarter with festival and hard dough bread.

Luminous Lagoon

Nature · ~4h

At Falmouth, half an hour east: microorganisms light the water when disturbed, so swimmers glow. Evening only, and only on late calls.

What to eat

Scotchies — Open-air jerk cooked over pimento wood in oil drums. The benchmark, and about 10 minutes from the port.
The Pelican Grill — A Montego Bay fixture since 1964 doing Jamaican breakfasts and fresh fish on the Hip Strip.
Pier 1 — On the waterfront near the terminal, good for a beer and a fish plate if you are not going far.

A little history

Montego Bay grew as a sugar port, and the great houses inland — Rose Hall and Greenwood — are where the island's plantation history is told, including the legend of Annie Palmer, the White Witch.

Jamaica gave the world reggae, ska, dancehall and dub; Bob Marley's Nine Mile birthplace is on the other side of the island, but the music is inescapable here.

Jerk is a Maroon technique — communities of escaped enslaved people who held out in the mountains — using pimento wood and scotch bonnet, and it predates the resorts by centuries.

Doctor's Cave Beach became famous in the 1920s when a British osteopath claimed its water had curative powers, and the tourist trade here has never really stopped.

The Rio Grande and Martha Brae bamboo rafts were originally used to move bananas downriver; Errol Flynn started the tourist version by racing them for fun.
