Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Ålesund
Peak cruise season runs May to September, with long daylight and the mildest weather in June-August (typically 12-18°C). Coastal rain is possible in any month, so pack a waterproof layer.
Good to know
Ålesund is very safe with low crime; the main hazards are slippery steps on the Aksla stairway in wet weather and fast-changing coastal conditions on the water. Norway is expensive, so budget accordingly.

A little history
On the stormy night of 23 January 1904 a fire razed the wooden town centre, destroying around 800 buildings and leaving some 10,000 of the 12,000 residents homeless, yet only one person died.
Ålesund was rebuilt in just a few years in the fashionable Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style, giving it Norway's most distinctive townscape of turrets, spires and ornamented stone facades.
Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who holidayed in the Sunnmøre fjords, sent four ships loaded with supplies and helpers after the fire, and the grateful town named its main street Keiser Wilhelms gate after him.
The town grew rich on fishing, and klippfisk — cod salted and dried on the coastal rocks — was exported in vast quantities to Spain and Portugal, which is why the local signature dish is called bacalao.
