Getting ashore

Dock. Two legs come before the train. A free shuttle links the cruise berths (10-13 and 25) to the Largo della Pace gate every 20-25 minutes, and nearly everyone uses it. From there the station is about 1 km — a 15-20 minute walk, a €2 city bus, or a €6 cruise shuttle — then 45-80 minutes by train to Roma Termini.

When to visit Civitavecchia (Rome)

Best April-June and September-October for mild temperatures (18-25C) and thinner crowds; July-August is hot (30C+) and Rome's sights are packed.

Getting back to the ship on time

Nearly everyone budgets for the train and forgets the two legs at the Civitavecchia end, which queue badly when several ships sail together. Independent travelers should be on a train out of Roma Termini at least 3 hours before all-aboard, since the port shuttle and the station transfer sit on top of the train time.

All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
