🇩🇪 Hamburg, Germany — Cruise Port Guide
Germany's biggest cruise homeport and a city built on water — more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined, a warehouse district of red brick on oak piles, and a concert hall like a glass wave dropped on an old cocoa store.

Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Hamburg
Baltic and fjord itineraries run roughly April to October. Summer is mild rather than hot, and rain is possible in any month.
Good to know
The three terminals are genuinely far apart and passengers do turn up at the wrong one. Check the ticket. Harbour ferry 62 doubles as a sightseeing trip and a way between terminals.
Things to do in Hamburg
Speicherstadt & HafenCity
Red-brick warehouses on canals, best seen from a bridge at dusk when they light up. HafenCity next door is Europe's largest inner-city redevelopment.
Elbphilharmonie plaza
A long curved escalator takes you to a free public viewing plaza between the old warehouse base and the glass concert hall above. Book the free ticket online in advance.
Harbour boat tour
The little barkassen boats thread the warehouse canals and the container terminals. Cheaper and better than the big tour boats, and they get into places the big ones cannot.
Miniatur Wunderland
The largest model railway in the world, and far more charming than that sounds — an airport with planes that actually take off. Book a timed ticket, it sells out.
St Michael's Church tower
Climb or take the lift up Hamburg's baroque landmark for the best view over the river and the port.
Sunday Fischmarkt
Only if your ship is in on a Sunday morning. It starts at 5am and is over by 9:30 — a genuine Hamburg institution rather than a tourist one.
What to eat
- Fischbrötchen
- Labskaus
- Franzbrötchen
- Currywurst
- Aalsuppe

A little history
Hamburg has been a free port city for over 800 years and still calls itself the Free and Hanseatic City. It answers to no region — it is a state in its own right.
The Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world built on timber piles, put up from 1883 to store coffee, tea, spices and carpets. It is now UNESCO-listed.
The Elbphilharmonie opened in 2017, seven years late and ten times over budget, and was immediately forgiven — the public plaza halfway up is free and open to anyone.
The Beatles played here for two years before they were famous, mostly on the Reeperbahn, and Lennon said he grew up in Hamburg rather than Liverpool.
Cruise ships use three terminals — Altona, HafenCity and Steinwerder — spread along the river. They are not close together.
