Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Heraklion (Crete)
April to June and September to October. July and August are hot with almost no rain — and Knossos has very little shade.
Good to know
Knossos is punishing in midday heat with almost no shade, so go first thing and do the museum afterwards. Taxi fares to the site are fixed but agree the price before setting off.
Things to do in Heraklion (Crete)
Knossos
Twenty minutes from the port. Go early — there is almost no shade and by midday it is crowded and hot. A guide makes an enormous difference here.
Archaeological Museum
Holds the finds from Knossos including the bull-leaping fresco and the Phaistos Disc. Do it after the site, not before, and the ruins make far more sense.
Koules Fortress & the old harbour
The 16th-century Venetian sea fort at the harbour mouth, a short walk from the cruise pier, with the walls and lion of St Mark intact.
Walk the Venetian walls
Among the best-preserved city fortifications in the Mediterranean. The Martinengo bastion holds Kazantzakis's grave and a view over the whole city.
Cretan lunch and raki
Cretan food is its own cuisine — dakos, wild greens, slow lamb. Raki arrives free at the end of the meal and refusing it is not really an option.
Beach at Amoudara
A long sandy stretch about 15 minutes west with organised loungers and tavernas — the easy option if the ruins do not appeal.
What to eat
- Dakos
- Kalitsounia
- Lamb with stamnagathi
- Graviera cheese
