Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Honningsvåg (North Cape)
The season is June to August. The midnight sun runs from mid-May to late July, when the plateau is open around the clock.
Getting back to the ship on time
The North Cape is often in fog or cloud, and there is no refund for weather. Book the ship's excursion — independent taxis are scarce and the last bus back is not negotiable.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
Things to do in Honningsvåg (North Cape)
North Cape plateau
A 45-minute coach ride across bare tundra to the globe monument, the cliff edge and a visitor centre cut into the rock. Fog is common — and the atmosphere in fog is its own thing.
King crab safari
A boat out to the pots, hauling crabs the size of dustbin lids, then eating them in a cabin. The signature excursion here and worth the money.
Sami camp & reindeer
Herders bring reindeer down near the road in summer. The good visits explain the herding year rather than just posing for photographs.
Gjesvær bird safari
A boat to the Gjesværstappan islands for puffins, gannets and sea eagles — one of the biggest seabird colonies in northern Europe.
Walk Honningsvåg
Small enough to see in an hour: the 1885 church, the harbour, and a museum covering the wartime burning and the fishing life.

Local phrases
A little history
The North Cape is usually billed as the northernmost point of mainland Europe, though the neighbouring Knivskjellodden headland is actually further north and Nordkapp is on an island — the tourism industry has long since stopped mentioning either fact.
The plateau has been a destination since 1664, when an Italian priest made the journey and wrote about it; the road only arrived in 1956.
The town was burned to the ground by retreating German forces in 1944 — only the church survived, which is why it is the oldest building here.
King crab, now a local speciality, is an invasive species: released by Soviet scientists in the 1960s, it spread west and is now fished commercially.
Honningsvåg has fewer than 2,500 residents but handles a large share of Norway's cruise traffic in summer.
