When to visit Kiel
The Baltic season runs May to September. Kieler Woche in late June brings three million visitors and books out every hotel in the region.
Good to know

Things to do in Kiel
Watch ships at the Holtenau locks
The Kiel Canal's locks at Holtenau handle enormous traffic, and there is a viewing platform. Oddly compelling, and free.
Kiel Maritime Museum
In the old fish auction hall on the waterfront, covering the canal, the shipyards and the naval history, with historic vessels moored outside.
Laboe Naval Memorial & U-995
Across the fjord by ferry: a 72-metre tower with a view over the Baltic, and a genuine Type VII U-boat beached beside it that you can walk through.
Fjord ferry to Falckenstein
The public fjord ferries are cheap, frequent and the nicest way to see the city — Falckenstein has a beach and a view of every ship entering the canal.
Kiel city centre & Holstenstraße
The pedestrian shopping street runs from the harbour into the centre. Not historic, but easy, and everything is within a short walk of the ship.
