🇳🇱 Rotterdam, Netherlands — Cruise Port Guide
Europe's biggest seaport, flattened in 1940 and rebuilt as an architectural experiment — cube houses tipped on their corners, a market hall you can live in, and Amsterdam forty minutes up the line.

Quick facts
Getting ashore
When to visit Rotterdam
April to October. April brings the tulip fields at Keukenhof, which is the one time of year worth planning around.
Getting back to the ship on time
Amsterdam is easy by train but Schiphol and the intercity line get very busy — buy tickets in advance and note the last workable return. Bicycles have priority over pedestrians and will not stop.
All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.
Things to do in Rotterdam
Markthal & the cube houses
The two most photographed buildings in the city are a few minutes apart. One cube house is open to walk through, and the market hall is the best lunch stop.
Amsterdam day trip
Forty minutes by intercity train from Rotterdam Centraal. Very doable independently, but check the last train back against your all-aboard time.
Water taxi & the Erasmus Bridge
Fast water taxis buzz across the Maas to Katendrecht and the Hotel New York. The bridge, nicknamed the Swan, is the city's emblem.
Kinderdijk windmills
Nineteen 18th-century windmills in a row, UNESCO-listed, reachable by waterbus. The most Dutch thing within reach of the port.
Delft or The Hague
Delft's canals and blue pottery, or The Hague's Mauritshuis with the Girl with a Pearl Earring — both under an hour by train.
SS Rotterdam
Holland America's 1959 flagship, moored and restored, with tours of the engine room and the original interiors.

A little history

The cube houses of 1984, tilted 45 degrees on hexagonal pylons, were designed so residents live in a forest of abstract trees. One is open as a museum.
Holland America Line was founded here in 1873, and its former headquarters is now the Hotel New York on the Wilhelminapier, right by the cruise terminal.
The SS Rotterdam, the line's 1959 flagship, is permanently moored across the water as a hotel and museum.
