Getting ashore

Tender. Ships anchor in the caldera and tender either to Athinios or to the Old Port below Fira; from the Old Port it's the cable car, a roughly 600-step stairway, or a winding road up to Fira town (about 10-15 minutes by cable car).

When to visit Santorini

Late April-June and September-October have warm, sunny weather (22-28C) without the intense July-August heat and peak crowds/cruise congestion.

Getting back to the ship on time

Tender queues back to the ship build fast on multi-ship days, so head back at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. Since June 2026 only 30% of a ship's guests may land at road-served Athinios, pushing the rest through the Old Port and its single cable car or 600-step climb. Civil Protection limits to March 2027 also close part of the Old Port and the Ammoudi coast path.

All-aboard is ship's time — check it in the daily programme, and set your watch to it.

A little history

The island is the rim of a massive caldera left by a Bronze Age volcanic eruption.

Oia's sunset draws crowds; arrive early to claim a viewpoint spot.

Tipping 5–10% is appreciated in tavernas but not obligatory.

Tenders land at the Old Port; a cable car or donkeys climb to Fira.
